Clomid for Men: Does It Increase Fertility?
Overview
Clomid is a popular brand name and nickname for generic clomiphene citrate. It’s an oral fertility medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in women who are unable to become pregnant.
Clomid for Men: How it works?
Clomiphene works by blocking estrogen at the pituitary. The pituitary sees less estrogen, and makes more LH. More LH means that the Leydig cells in the testis make more testosterone.
So clomiphene is a way to increase testosterone in the blood and the testis at the same time. It preserves testis size and function while increasing blood testosterone.
Clomid for Male Infertility
Clomid is typically taken once a day, with a staring dose of 25 mg per day. However, the dosage often needs to be adjusted later on, as the individual response to the medication varies. It is essential to find a dosage that supports optimal hormone production, because too high testosterone levels can decrease sperm count and cause other serious side effects. Testosterone, LH and FSH levels are typically re-tested within a few weeks after the therapy is started, and the dosage of clomiphine citrate is adjusted accordingly.
What are the Clomid for Male side effects?
The possible side effects of Clomid include:
- tenderness of the pectoral muscle
- irritability
- acne
- acceleration of prostate cancer growth (if cancer is already present)
- changes in your vision that are caused by a swelling of the pituitary gland (rare)
The side effects of Clomid are typically reversible if you stop taking the drug. If you experience any of the side effects listed above while taking Clomid, you should stop taking Clomid and contact your doctor.
The 5 Main Reasons Clomiphene Citrate (CC or Clomid) is Not Usually Prescribed to Men with Low Testosterone Due to Secondary Hypogonadism:
1. Most doctors aren’t aware of the efficacy and safety of clomiphene use in men
2. Most doctors think of Clomid as a “women’s drug” to increase fertility
3. Clomid is FDA approved only for use in women
4. Clomid use in men is considered “off label”
5. Clomiphene citrate is now generic and really inexpensive so it’s not advertised very much
Note: HCG is more commonly known and prescribed for secondary hypogonadism in men but it involves injection and is expensive, so if clomiphene works alone I think that is preferred.
