What is dostinex?

Cabergoline belongs to a class of medications known as prolactin inhibitors. This medication is used to treat high levels of prolactin hormone in your body. High levels of prolactin in women can cause symptoms such as unwanted breast milk and missed periods and can cause difficulty becoming pregnant. High levels of prolactin in men can cause symptoms such as enlarged breasts and decreased sexual ability/desire. Cabergoline is an ergot medication and works by blocking the release of prolactin from the pituitary gland.

Dostinex side effects:
 

Stop using cabergoline and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

  • feeling short of breath on exertion;
  • chest discomfort, dry cough or hack;
  • feeling weak or tired, loss of appetite, rapid weight loss;
  • feeling like you might pass out;
  • lower back pain;
  • urinating less than usual or not at all; or
  • swelling in your ankles or feet.

Less serious side effects may include:

  • nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, gas, indigestion, constipation;

  • headache, depressed mood;
  • dizziness, spinning sensation;
  • drowsiness, nervousness;
  • hot flashes;
  • numbness or tingly feeling; or
  • dry mouth.

 

Warnings

  • Contraindications
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Hypersensitivity to ergot derivatives
  • Severe hepatic disease
  • Concurrent use with D2 antagonists
  • History of pulmonary, pericardial, or retroperitoneal fibroti disorders
  • Women planning to nurse

History of cardiac valvular disorders as suggested by anatomical evidence of valvulopathy of any valve, determined by pretreatment evaluation including echocardiographic demonstration of valve leaflet thickening, valve restriction, or mixed valve restriction-stenosis.

Uses:

  • Cabergoline 0.5 mg tablets (Dostinex) are used to supress lactation for medical reasons or treat patients with excess production of a hormone called prolactin.
  • Cabergoline 1 mg and 2 mg tablets (Cabaser) are used to treat Parkinson's disease.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Do not take cabergoline if you:

  • are allergic to cabergoline or any ingredients of the medication
  • are allergic to ergot derivatives (e.g., ergotamine)
  • have a history of lung or heart fibrotic disorders
  • have altered heart valves (e.g., valve restriction)
  • have high blood pressure that is not controlled
