Ketotifen belongs to the group of stabilizers of mast cell membranes. It inhibits the release of histamine and other mediators (including leukotrienes, cytokines) from mast cells, prevents eosinophilic infiltration in places of allergic inflammation. It has blocking effect on (H1) histamine receptors, inhibits phosphodiesterase, blocks calcium channels of cells, is a functional antagonist of leukotrienes.

Ketotifen is an effective oral agent for preventing bronchial asthma. It has a pronounced anti-anaphylactic and antiallergic effect. When used alone, it does not stop asthma attacks, but leads to a decrease in the number, duration and intensity of these attacks. In some cases there is a complete disappearance of asthma attacks. The drug favorably influences the excretion, reduces eosinophilia, reduces the need for the use of bronchodilators, corticosteroids, etc.
